The Camino’s €30 – a story of faith

There are moments when a story of the Camino de Santiago feels as if it were written by destiny itself. This is one of those stories.
Ava, a young pilgrim from the United Kingdom, chose the Portuguese Coastal Way seeking an inner adventure — a journey of silence, discovery and reconnection with herself. What she didn’t expect was that the Camino would return to her, almost magically, exactly what she needed in that moment.

In the final days of her pilgrimage, on the way to Finisterre, Ava realised she had run out of money.
With no ATMs nearby and cafés accepting only cash, the weight of worry settled in. Even so, she kept walking, trusting that something — or someone — would guide her.

The next morning, the sun rose through low clouds and the distant echo of Atlantic waves followed her steps.
As she stepped aside to let a car pass, something caught her eye on the roadside: €30 in notes, soaked from the previous day’s rain.

Ava stood there in disbelief. She waited for hours, hoping to find the possible owner, but no one appeared.
Those €30 — lost, forgotten, or perhaps left by an anonymous angel — were enough to feed her and give her a bed for the night.

“I don’t know if it was something spiritual or just the unbelievably generous energy of the Camino, but I will never forget it,” Ava says.

Throughout her journey, she also faced days of loneliness. Sometimes, her only company was the rhythm of her steps and the wind.
Even so, she discovered something profound: loneliness also teaches.
She learned that she could be fine on her own — that inner strength appears when there is no one else to lean on.

When she finally reached Obradoiro Square, exhausted and overwhelmed, only one thought crossed her mind:

 “F***ing hell, I made it.”

Moments later, she spotted a friend she had lost contact with a week earlier — a final surprise from the Camino, as if it wanted to close her journey with an embrace.

Ava returned home transformed.
She carried with her a deep sense of strength, renewed empathy for strangers, and an awareness that every encounter in life is, in its own way, a small section of the same path.

“Even though we’re not walking the Camino in everyday life, life itself is a Camino,” she says.
“Now I’m kinder to those I meet — because we never know the weight they carry.”
